Autism Evaluations for Children and Adolescents in Baltimore, Maryland

Dr. Shelley McDermott provides individualized autism evaluations for children and adolescents at her Baltimore office, serving families from Baltimore City, Baltimore County, and communities throughout Maryland.

Initial parent meetings are conducted through telehealth. Assessment appointments with children and adolescents take place in person at McDermott Psychological's office at the Rotunda in Baltimore's Hampden neighborhood.

What to Expect

The evaluation process generally includes three stages:

Initial Parent Meeting

The process begins with a telehealth meeting with Dr. McDermott. Parents discuss their child's history, current concerns, and the questions they hope the evaluation will answer. Dr. McDermott then explains the recommended assessment process and applicable fee before the evaluation is scheduled.

Individualized In-Person Assessment

The child participates in an in-person assessment at Dr. McDermott's office at The Rotunda in Baltimore's Hampden neighborhood. The activities and time required vary according to the child's age, needs, and the scope of the evaluation.

Feedback and Written Report

After the assessment is complete, Dr. McDermott meets with the parents to explain the findings, discuss whether a diagnosis applies, answer questions, and review recommended next steps.

Families receive a written report documenting the evaluation results and individualized recommendations for home, school, treatment, and other appropriate services.

Practical Recommendations for Moving Forward

Recommendations are developed around the child's particular needs and circumstances.

Depending on the evaluation findings, they may address:

  • Educational supports and accommodations

  • Communication or social-development supports

  • Behavioral or emotional strategies

  • Therapy or other clinical services

  • Support for daily living and adaptive skills

  • Additional medical, educational, or developmental consultation

  • Resources for parents and caregivers

The goal is for families to leave the evaluation with a clearer understanding of their child and a practical foundation for deciding what comes next.
